V. C. Bird International Airport

V. C. Bird International Airport, coded ANU, is the principal gateway to Antigua and Barbuda, its single runway just 62 feet above the Caribbean near Osbourn on Antigua's northeast coast. The site began life in 1941 as Coolidge Field, an airfield the United States Army Air Forces built during the Second World War, and it stayed under American control for several years before reverting to civilian use as Coolidge International Airport. In 1985 the government renamed it for Sir Vere Cornwall Bird, the country's first prime minister, and the airport has carried his initials ever since. A modern terminal, Terminal A, opened in 2015 after a decade-long construction process and remains the building most arriving visitors pass through today. Despite serving an entire two-island nation from one runway, ANU handles a steady flow of transatlantic and regional traffic, much of it tied to tourism, since Antigua's beaches and resorts depend heavily on visitors arriving by air rather than by sea. Regional turboprops and full-size jets share the same ramp throughout the day.
