Bovanenkovo Airport — Bovanenkovo, Russia

Bovanenkovo Airport lies on the Yamal Peninsula in Russia's Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, an Arctic stretch of territory well above the polar circle. The field sits at a low 24 feet in elevation and operates two runways despite the harsh permafrost conditions surrounding it. Bovanenkovo itself is a settlement built to support one of the region's major natural gas fields, and the airport exists mainly to move workers and equipment through an area with almost no road access. Coded BVJ, the airport handles little ordinary passenger traffic; its schedule instead follows the rhythm of shift rotations tied to gas production rather than tourism or general travel.
