Caen Carpiquet airport
Long before it became a quiet regional gateway to Normandy, the airfield at Carpiquet outside Caen was one of the most fiercely contested pieces of ground in the 1944 Battle of Normandy, changing hands only after weeks of brutal fighting between German defenders and advancing Allied, largely Canadian, forces. Rebuilt after the war, Caen Carpiquet Airport now handles a modest schedule of flights to Lyon and seasonal leisure routes to the UK, serving a city famous for its Norman ducal castle and as a base for visiting the D-Day landing beaches nearby. A single paved runway occupies flat farmland just west of the city center, a short taxi ride from Caen's medieval quarter.
