Dortheys Hiyo Eluay International Airport — Sentani, Indonesia

World War II history runs deep at this Papuan airfield, which operated as Hollandia airbase under Dutch colonial administration before becoming a massive Allied staging ground and one of General Douglas MacArthur's key Pacific theater installations after its capture from Japanese forces in 1944. DJJ now serves Jayapura, the provincial capital of Indonesia's Papua region, though the airport itself sits near Lake Sentani rather than in the city proper. Its modern name honors Theys Hiyo Eluay, a Papuan tribal and political leader advocating greater regional autonomy who was assassinated in 2001, a killing that remains a sensitive chapter in the province's relationship with the Indonesian state. Garuda Indonesia and domestic carriers connect the airport to Jakarta and other major cities across the archipelago.
