Egal International Airport — Hargeisa, Somalia

Named for Mohamed Haji Ibrahim Egal, a former prime minister of Somalia who later became president of the self-declared republic of Somaliland, HGA serves Hargeisa, the de facto capital of a territory that maintains its own government, currency, and institutions despite lacking widespread international recognition. Flights here connect Somaliland to a limited but growing set of destinations, since many major international carriers still avoid direct service given the territory's unresolved political status. The airport plays an outsized role in a region with poor road infrastructure and where relations with the internationally recognized government in Mogadishu remain unresolved decades after Somaliland's unilateral declaration of independence in the early 1990s. Trade in livestock, one of the territory's primary exports, and remittances from a substantial diaspora in Europe and North America both depend heavily on the connectivity this single airfield provides.
