Horn Island Airport — Horn, Australia

Horn Island Airport, given the code HID, is a small airfield on Horn Island in the Torres Strait, part of Queensland, Australia, situated between the Australian mainland and Papua New Guinea. The airport serves as a key transportation hub for the Torres Strait Islands, connecting the remote island communities to Cairns and other mainland Queensland destinations, since many of the smaller surrounding islands lack their own airstrips capable of handling larger aircraft. HID plays an outsized role for its size, supporting essential services, medical evacuations, and supply transport for island residents. It also has historical significance from World War II, when the area served defensive functions given its strategic northern location.
