The facility carries the name of a senior cleric from the early years following Iran's 1979 revolution. Positioned outside the city center on the surrounding plateau, the airport has seen periodic terminal improvements aimed at accommodating both religious pilgrimage traffic and leisure visitors drawn to central Iran's craft traditions, including miniature painting, carpet weaving, and metalwork produced in workshops around the old city.
