LAS took its current name in 2021, honoring longtime Nevada senator Harry Reid after decades as McCarran International Airport, and it remains one of the busiest airports in the United States thanks almost entirely to Las Vegas's identity as a global entertainment and convention destination. Its location just minutes from the Strip means visitors often reach a casino resort within half an hour of landing, and the airport itself has long leaned into that identity, historically featuring slot machines scattered throughout its terminals. Passenger volumes swing heavily around major conventions, sporting events, and holiday weekends, reflecting a tourism-driven economy rather than local population size. A dedicated international terminal added capacity for long-haul flights as the city worked to attract visitors beyond its traditional domestic American market. Few airports anywhere are so completely defined by the single city they serve as LAS is by Las Vegas.
