Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport — Rochester, United States

Renamed in 2021 to honor the abolitionist, writer, and orator who made the city his home for a quarter century, ROC now carries Frederick Douglass's name alongside its role serving western New York State. Douglass published his abolitionist newspaper, The North Star, from Rochester and is buried in the city's Mount Hope Cemetery, making the tribute a deliberate acknowledgment of the region's civil rights history. Rochester itself grew into an industrial and imaging powerhouse through companies like Eastman Kodak, Xerox, and Bausch and Lomb, all headquartered there for much of the twentieth century, and that legacy still shapes the local economy despite significant contraction in recent decades. ROC offers domestic connections to major hub airports, supporting business travel tied to the University of Rochester and a resurgent optics and photonics research sector. Winters bring substantial lake-effect snow off nearby Lake Ontario, occasionally testing the airport's de-icing operations during the colder months.
