Scandinavian Mountains Airport — Malung-Sälen, Sweden

Scandinavian Mountains Airport opened in 2019 as a purpose-built facility designed to serve the ski resorts of Sälen in Sweden and Trysil in Norway, an unusual arrangement in which a single airport funded largely by Swedish regional interests caters heavily to visitors bound for destinations in a neighboring country. Located in a sparsely populated stretch of forest and highland terrain near the Norwegian border, SCR was built specifically to shorten the long road transfers that winter tourists previously faced when flying into Oslo or the closest Swedish cities. Charter flights and scheduled seasonal routes bring skiers from Stockholm, other Scandinavian cities, and parts of continental Europe directly to the doorstep of some of the region's most popular alpine terrain. The airport's traffic is highly seasonal, peaking sharply during the winter sports months and quieting considerably once the snow melts each spring.
