Platon Oyunsky Yakutsk International Airport — Yakutsk, Russia

Yakutsk Airport, officially named for the Yakut writer and statesman Platon Oyunsky and coded YKS, sits in the capital of the Sakha Republic, a territory covering roughly a fifth of Russia's landmass yet sparsely linked by roads. Yakutsk itself ranks among the coldest cities on Earth, with winter temperatures regularly dropping past minus 45 Celsius, conditions that shaped the airport's runway engineering for deep permafrost and extreme seasonal swings. YKS functions less as a leisure gateway than as a lifeline, connecting the capital to remote Sakha settlements that depend on air transport once winter ice roads become unreliable. Cargo traffic tied to the republic's diamond and gold mining industries adds further weight to operations. The terminal has seen modernization aimed at improving capacity for scheduled routes and the charter flights common across Siberia's interior.
