Gander International Airport — Gander, Canada

Gander International Airport, code YQX, sits on Newfoundland's rocky Avalon approaches and carries an outsized legacy in aviation history. Built as a refueling waypoint for propeller aircraft crossing the North Atlantic, Gander became a household name on September 11, 2001, when 38 diverted widebody jets landed there and the town of Gander sheltered thousands of stranded passengers. Today YQX still serves general aviation, military flights, and occasional transatlantic diversions thanks to its long runway and reliable weather infrastructure. The story later inspired the musical Come From Away. Travelers researching YQX typically find a small but historically resonant facility rather than a bustling commercial hub.
