Gautam Buddha International Airport — Siddharthanagar (Bhairahawa), Nepal

Gautam Buddha International Airport serves Siddharthanagar, also known as Bhairahawa, in Nepal's Lumbini Province near the border with India. Nepal lists the field's elevation at 358 feet; a single runway currently handles all traffic, a modest footprint for a facility carrying international-airport status. Its significance comes less from size than from location: Siddharthanagar sits only a short drive from Lumbini, the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, the historical Buddha, and the airport was developed specifically to give Buddhist pilgrims and tourists a direct route into the region without funneling everyone through Kathmandu first. Lumbini draws visitors from across Asia, particularly from Buddhist-majority countries seeking to visit the sacred garden marking the Buddha's birth. Despite its large-airport classification, BWA still depends on a limited schedule of regional and international flights, and growth here has been gradual rather than explosive. The airport represents one of Nepal's more deliberate attempts to diversify air access to religious tourism sites beyond the capital, tying its identity closely to Lumbini rather than to Bhairahawa's own modest size as a border town.
