Corfu Ioannis Kapodistrias International Airport — Kerkyra (Corfu), Greece

Squeezed onto a narrow strip of land between the hills of Corfu and the Ionian Sea, this airport carries the name of Ioannis Kapodistrias, the Corfu-born statesman who became the first head of state of modern independent Greece. Its single runway partly rides atop a causeway crossing Lake Chalikiopoulou, a lagoon just south of Corfu Town, and the approach is often cited among pilots as one of Europe's more demanding, requiring careful maneuvering around surrounding high ground and the town's rooftops. Every summer the field becomes one of Greece's busiest, absorbing a flood of charter and low-cost flights from the United Kingdom, Germany, and Scandinavia as holidaymakers head for the island's beaches and the Venetian-era old town, itself a UNESCO World Heritage site. Corfu's mild, damp winters and lush, olive-covered landscape set it apart from the drier Aegean islands, and the airport's traffic reflects that seasonal rhythm, quiet from November through March and frantic the rest of the year.
