Ciudad Real International Airport
Ciudad Real Central Airport, coded CQM, earned an unusual reputation as one of Europe's most conspicuous aviation ghost projects after opening in the late 2000s as Spain's first privately financed international airport. Ambitious plans envisioned it easing congestion at Madrid, roughly a hundred kilometers north, but passenger numbers never materialized and the facility closed within a few years amid financial collapse. Sitting on the arid plains of Castilla-La Mancha, the airport's long runway and modern terminal have since found sporadic new life hosting aircraft storage, pilot training, and film productions rather than scheduled commercial flights.
