Duqm International Airport — Duqm, Oman

Oman's ambitions to diversify its economy beyond oil become visible the moment a flight lands at DQM, built to serve a once-sleepy fishing town on the Arabian Sea that now anchors a special economic zone with a deep-water port, dry dock, and planned refinery complex. Located in the sparsely populated Al Wusta Governorate, the airport was built with runway and terminal capacity far exceeding current demand, anticipating future growth tied to industrial and logistics investment. Passenger numbers remain modest compared to Muscat, reflecting the region's early stage of development rather than any technical limitation of the facility itself. The surrounding coastline stretches largely undeveloped between rocky headlands and open desert, a striking contrast to the industrial ambitions taking shape nearby. For now, DQM mostly serves workers, government officials, and a small but growing number of tourists exploring Oman's remote central coast.
