King Phalo Airport — East London, South Africa

King Phalo Airport, bearing the code ELS, took its current name in recent years to honor a historic Xhosa monarch, replacing the airport's former colonial-era East London designation. The facility serves Eastern Cape Province's coastal city of East London, notable as one of the few South African cities built where a river meets the ocean rather than along an open coastline. Manufacturing ties to the automotive industry, particularly a major vehicle assembly plant in the area, generate a steady stream of business travel through the terminal. Buffalo City, the surrounding metropolitan area, blends industrial activity with beaches and nature reserves popular among domestic tourists. Flight schedules connect primarily to Johannesburg and Cape Town, with the airport functioning as a regional feeder rather than an international gateway in its own right.
