Svalbard Airport, Longyear — Longyearbyen, Norway

LYR is Svalbard Airport, Longyear, the world's northernmost airport with scheduled public flights, located near Longyearbyen in Norway's Svalbard archipelago. It connects this remote Arctic settlement to mainland Norway, primarily Tromsø and Oslo, serving researchers, tourists, and the small local population. LYR plays a critical logistical role given Svalbard's isolation and extreme climate, with permafrost engineering considerations built into its runway construction. The airport supports scientific expeditions related to Arctic research, including proximity to the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. Tourism has grown steadily, with visitors drawn to polar bear wildlife, glaciers, and the midnight sun, making LYR a gateway to one of the most unique destinations on Earth.
