Cap Haitien International Airport — Cap Haitien, Haiti

Cap-Haitien International Airport serves northern Haiti's largest city, a former French colonial port once celebrated as a cultural rival to the capital, and today operates as the country's secondary international gateway alongside the airport in Port-au-Prince. Regional and charter carriers connect Cap-Haitien to Florida and other Caribbean points, a role that expanded after runway improvements allowed larger jet aircraft to land safely. The field gives travelers a far shorter path to the Citadelle Laferriere and the ruins of the Sans-Souci Palace, UNESCO-listed monuments built in the mountains above the city by an early Haitian king, than the long overland journey from the capital would otherwise require. Cap-Haitien itself retains cobblestone streets and colonial architecture reflecting its eighteenth-century prominence as a sugar and coffee port. For a region historically underserved by air links, CAP represents an important alternative point of entry, easing pressure on the capital's congested airport while supporting the north's tourism ambitions.
