Dara Sakor International Airport — Ta Noun, Cambodia

A sprawling Chinese-financed resort and industrial development along Cambodia's southwestern coast in Koh Kong province includes DSY, an airport built with a runway considerably longer than the area's modest tourist traffic would seem to justify. The scale has drawn scrutiny from foreign governments and analysts who question whether the site could someday support military aircraft rather than purely commercial charters. Developers have promoted the surrounding concession as a future beach and casino destination aimed largely at Chinese tourists, complete with plans for hotels, golf courses, and a deep-water port carved out of what was previously protected coastal forest and wetland. Commercial passenger service through DSY has remained limited relative to the scale of construction on the ground, and much of the concession land still awaits the tourism development originally promised when the long-term lease was signed.
