Region of Murcia International Airport

Opened in January 2019 after one of the more troubled construction histories among modern European airports, RMU sits near the village of Corvera in southeastern Spain and finally gave the Murcia region a proper international gateway. Construction had actually finished years earlier, but disputes over flight paths conflicting with a nearby military airbase, along with financing problems, left the completed terminal sitting unused for the better part of a decade before commercial flights finally began. RMU replaced the older Region de Murcia-San Javier Airport for scheduled commercial traffic, redirecting passengers away from a runway shared with military training operations. The surrounding Region de Murcia is known for the Costa Calida coastline, the Mar Menor lagoon, and inland agricultural areas that supply much of Europe's winter produce. Low-cost carriers now connect RMU with cities across the United Kingdom, Germany, and other parts of Europe, supporting the area's growing tourism economy.
